Common name: Blazing star, Kansas gay feather, gayfeather
Liatris spicata is one of the highlights of the Alma VanDusen Garden in mid-summer. The dark purple buds of this compact plant give way to spikes of rosy lavender bottlebrush-like flowers that will last a month or more. Its rich nectar attracts butterflies and bees. Liatris spicata is native to the Canadian prairies but flourishes in our maritime climate.
