Gillenia trifoliata (synonym: Porteranthus trifoliata) is a perennial, native to eastern North America. It is a shade-lover. It was named for Arnold Gillenius, a German botanist and physician. The origin of its common name, Bowman's root, is unknown. The dried root bark has traditionally been used as an emetic.
