Amelanchier alnifolia is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to western North America. It has large, white flowers in late spring followed by edible blue pomes in summer. Amelanchier is a French name for this and similar plants, alnifolia means 'alder-like foliage'; 'Saskatoon' is the Cree name for the berry. The genus name is pronounced in different ways.
