Common name: Lady tulip, persian tulip
Tulipa clusiana is a short tulip native to western Asia. It has pointy petals which are red and white. A cultivar, T. clusiana var. chrysantha, is red and yellow. They can be found in the Stanley Smith Rock Garden but are not very long-lived in our wet climate.
The species name 'clusiana' is from Carolus Clusius, a 16th-century Dutch botanist who studied 'breaking', the colour-feathering phenomenon which led to 'Tulip Mania.'
