Common name: Empress tree, princess tree
Paulownia tomentosa, a spectacular tree, flowering with heliotrope-coloured foxglove-like flowers before the leaves come out, it is known as the Empress Tree because it was one of the Imperial plants of Japan, appearing on the crest of the Mikado. The seed pods that appear after the flowers are fuzzy and beige-coloured, often staying on the tree (the pods in the photo are from a branch that fell in late February).
