Common name: Sweet gum, sweetgum, American styrax
Liquidambar styraciflua is a deciduous tree native to warm temperate areas of the eastern US down to Central America. The leaves are palmate, with several sharp points, and have brilliant fall colour. The bark is deeply fissured. The tree sports hard, round, bristly 'gum balls' in fall.
We have several of the species scattered around the Garden and also some cultivars.
