Common name: River birch, black birch
Betula nigra is a deciduous tree native to the eastern US southwest to Texas. It can take more heat than other members of the genus. We have planted it and several of its cultivars to replace Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, Himalayan white birch, which has been attacked by the bronze birch borer. B. nigra's bark is brownish, unlike the white bark of B. utilis.
