Common name: River birch
Betula nigra [DURA-HEAT] = 'Bnmtf' is a cultivated variety of the river birch. It is typically grown as a multi-stemmed tree and is an excellent choice for planting along river banks. It is one of the most disease-free and insect-resistant birches, as well as being more heat tolerant than other cultivars. The soft green, diamond-shaped leaves fade to golden yellow in the fall. Its cream and tan bark exfoliates to reveal a lighter inner bark. It was discovered as a seedling by Dwayne Moon of Moon's Tree Farm in Loganville, GA. We have three specimens in Bed 67 along Heather Pond.
