Common Name: Darwin’s barberry
Berberis darwinii is a tall shrub with bright orange-yellow flowers followed by blue berries, which are acidic but edible. It was actually identified by Darwin himself.
Berberis often has beautiful foliage with brightly coloured fruit. Our garden includes other varieties such as the Japanese B. thunbergii 'Rose Glow' and the orange-flowered Berberis x lologensis, the Lake Lolog barberry.
A tonic made from the bark has been used as an antibacterial medicine.
