Common name: Beale's barberry, leatherleaf mahonia
Mahonia bealei is a large evergreen shrub native to China. Its leaves look like holly leaves and are tough and prickly. Large clusters of yellow flowers in early spring are followed by purple berries in late summer. We have several specimens in the Fern Dell.
