Mahonia japonica 'Hiemalis' is a large evergreen shrub native to Japan. Its leathery leaves sometimes turn red in cold spells. It blooms in late winter along the Winter Walk (hence the Latin cultivar name) and has scented sprays of yellow flowers, which are followed by dark blue berries.
