Common name: Spiketail
Stachyurus praecox is a deciduous large shrub/small tree which has hanging racemes of round yellow flowers in late winter. The genus name is pronounced stack-ee-U-russ, from the Greek word 'stachys' which means 'ear of corn.' In Japan, these flowers look like ornamental hairpins in the way they hang from the branches. Our largest specimen is across the path and down from the Waterfall.
