Koelreuteria paniculata
Common name: Golden rain tree, goldenrain tree, pride of India, China tree
Koelreuteria paniculata is a deciduous tree, native to East Asia, that is covered with panicles of small yellow flowers in early summer. Seen from a distance, the tree looks yellow while in bloom. The flowers turn into papery seed pods, a little like lanterns, that stay on the tree and provide winter interest.
In other parts of North America, these trees are considered invasive. Here, it is probably too cool and wet for them to be a problem, but our trees are infected with verticillium wilt and may have to be removed.
