Confidence
Confidence is a work by Canadian/American artist Michael Dennis. He was a professor of neurophysiology before becoming an artist, and his studio is on Denman Island. This work is carved from salvaged red cedar logs and came to the Garden as part of the Earth Art exhibition in 2012. According to the catalogue for that show, "Dennis' works are semi-representational, they have power, presence and personality and demonstrate an intimate mastery of the human form." It was anonymously purchased for the Garden by two member/volunteers.
Dennis also created the well-known 'Dude Chilling' work at Vancouver's Guelph Park. The original sculpture of 'Dude' was exhibited at VanDusen in the 2012 exhibition, along with a number of other wood sculptures by Dennis.
