Departure was created by American sculptor George Lundeen. He often translates scenes of everyday life into his sculpture. According to the artist, "The original piece came from a sketch I did in the Rome train station. There were a couple of kids sitting across from me on the marble floor. It became the first life-sized piece I ever did." The original work was completed over two years, 1984-86. Our bronze sculpture is one of several reproductions of the original work.
This is one of the few artworks in the Garden which visitors are encouraged to touch.
