Common name: Cornelian cherry, Cornelian cherry dogwood, European cornel
Cornus mas is a deciduous tree which has small yellow flowers on bare branches in late winter, followed by edible red cherry-like fruit (cornel) in late summer. The fruit are the same colour as the gemstone called either cornelian or carnelian, hence the common name. The wood is extremely hard.
