Common name: Japanese banana, hardy banana
Musa basjoo is a winter-hardy banana used as an accent plant in our summer annual borders. It is cut back in autumn and wrapped in straw, but it comes back the following spring. It is an herbaceous perennial, not a tree. Bananas usually don't set fruit in Vancouver, but there are exceptions. This plant has been used in Asia for making textiles.
