Common name: Goat Horn Tree
Native to China, Carrierea calycina is a rarely cultivated deciduous tree in the willow family. In 1994 Peter Wharton, former Curator of the Asian Garden at UBC Botanical Garden went on a seed collecting trip to China. Upon his return, he sent seeds of the Carrierea calycina to several botanical gardens throughout the world. At UBC he planted some of the seeds, and two of the seedlings were given to VanDusen. The photos are of the male Goat Horn Tree growing on the Rhododendron Walk. It is in flower in late June.
It was a tree of the month in 2013.
