Common names: Hard-fern, deer fern, ladder fern
Blechnum spicant: The sterile leaves at the bottom of the fern have flat, wavy-margined leaflets which attract more sunlight and crowd out competitors. The upright fertile fronds have much narrower leaflets, each with two thick rows of sori on the underside, and are more exposed to pollinators. These ferns are an important understory plant in our temperate rainforest and grow in many parts of the Garden.
