Common name: Black lilyturf, black mondo grass, monkey grass
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' is native to Japan and can be found in our Japanese Collection. It also grows in the Black Garden, where its strappy black leaves and shiny berries are the perfect foil for many yellow plants. Small pinkish flowers appear in summer.
Ophiopogon comes from the Greek words 'ophis' meaning serpent and 'pogon' meaning beard. Planiscapus refers to the flat shape of the flower stalk.
Mondo grass or monkey grass sports pale flowers followed by dark berries. Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' has beautiful black foliage.
