Common Name: Carolina allspice
Calycanthus floridus is a shrub native to the eastern US. Genus name is from 'calyx' and anthos meaning 'flower'. The species name refers to 'Florida', where it is found in the northern part of the state. The May-blooming red flowers are fragrant, as is the wood. It was one of the early plants to be sent back to Europe from America in the 18th century.
