Common name: Fritillary, checkered fritilary, snake's head lily
Fritillaria meleagris has an unusual checkered flower which is remiscent of a snake's head or the mottled feathers of a guinea fowl ('meleagris' is the Greek word for this bird). They bloom in mid-spring in the Mediterranean Garden and the north edge of the Perennial Garden.
