Picea abies & cultivars
Common Name: Norway spruce, European spruce
Picea abies is a tall, evergreen conifer native to Europe. It prefers cool summers so does well in our climate. We have also have several cultivars in our Garden, including:
1) Picea abies ‘Virgata’: Tree of the Month, March 2016, 'is one of the most popular trees with visitors. Its common name is Snakebranch spruce. This cultivar originated as a rare, naturally occurring mutation of Norway spruce (Picea abies), which is native from the mountains of northern and central Europe to the Ural Mountains.
2) Picea abies 'Nidiformis" and P. abies 'Little Gem' are dwarf cultivars developed from witches brooms.
3) Picea abies 'Inversa' is a weeping form that clings to the rock formations at the entry to the Heather Garden
