Acer saccharum
Common Name: Sugar maple
Acer saccharum is native to Eastern Canada, and it does not get cold enough here for maple syrup production. However, one Okanagan grower has a maple syrup start-up, and others on Vancouver Island are making syrup from big leaf maples.
In sunny areas, especially in colder climates than ours, fall leaf colour is bright red, but our trees grow mostly in the shade so are yellow.
This tree's name is sometimes confused with that of Acer saccharinum.
Most of our sugar maples are the species, but in the Maple Grove we have a cultivar, A. saccharum 'Legacy'
