Common name: Tasmanian tree fern
Dicksonia antarctica is one of the few plants we share in common with Bloedel. Ours can be found mostly in the Fern Dell (there used to be a few in the Southern Hemisphere Garden, but they have not survived.) They are native to Australia and will survive our winters if well wrapped (see photo). Their ancestors date back to the Jurassic period.
We also have other species of Dicksonia in the Garden, including D. fibrosa and D. squarrosa, but the tree ferns are poorly labeled. Many have a short lifespan in our climate, even if they get wrapped up for winter.
