Ricinus communis
Castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) is a striking tender perennial from tropical Africa. It is grown as an annual in North America. In just one season it can reach the height of 3 m/10 ft. Castor oil plant thrives in a sunny area with moist well-drained soil and can manage partial shade as well. It is not surprising that it has become invasive in some of the warmer areas of North America.
This plant is in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), a family that produces a lot of toxic substances (phytotoxins). Every part of castor oil plant is poisonous. Wear gloves and don’t put any part of it in your mouth. The seeds of castor oil plant contain the highly toxic ricin - a killer. In fact, it has been used in assassinations.
