Eurya japonica is a small, evergreen shrub native to East Asia. The glossy, green-leafed branches grow somewhat horizontally, and in early spring, the stems are covered with small, white flowers. It is considered a sacred tree by members of the Shinto religion.
We planted the species in 1987 in the Meconopsis Dell, and it is still thriving. Two cultivars, E. japonica 'Winter Wine', were planted in 2024 in other parts of the Sino-Himalayan Garden. Its leaves turn purple in the winter, but the flowers do not smell good.
Photos taken of the species in the Meconopsis Dell, March 25, 2025.
