Tulipa 'Lizzie'
Tulipa ‘Lizzie’ is tiny in size. But with its bright red flowers and jet black centers, you will never miss it. Native to the mountainous regions of Eurasia and Northern Africa, these spring bloomers grow best in good drainage and full sun. Happy under these conditions, Tulipa ‘Lizzie’ will naturalize.
According to our Plant Documentation Technician, Tulipa ‘Lizzie’ was purchased from Van Noort Bulb Company. Although a few online references list it as a cultivar of Tulipa orphanidea, she said it is thought to be a hybrid. A tulip hybrid is a result of crossing two different tulip species or varieties to create a new, distinct type. A tulip cultivar is a cultivated variety of tulip. It has been developed and selected for specific traits, such as colour, shape, or bloom time.
The pictures were taken in the Mediterranean Garden at VanDusen. It was spring, and these tiny hopeful tulips were scattered about in bloom. Small things make the world.
