Common name: Birchleaf maple
Acer stachyophyllum subsp. betulifolium is a multi-stemmed, deciduous tree native to the Himalayas, west and central China. It was first described and named by Carl Johann Maximowicz, a German-Russian botanist and plant collector.
A. stachyophyllum subsp. betulifolium leaves are medium green, unlobed, have doubly serrate margins, and are downy on the undersides. In fall the leaves turn to shades of yellow before shedding. Being dioecious, male and female flowers are on separate trees. Birchleaf maple prefers sandy or gritty loam.
The photos of Acer stachyophyllum subsp. betulifolium were taken in late May 2024.
